Follow the daily hair care tips below and then make an appointment at Marilyn’s Round Rock hair salon for a cut and style that will bring out the best in your curls! At your appointment, Marilyn can share specific products and styling tips for your individual hair type and issues.

Always detangle your hair gently. Never pull, tug, or use rough brushing to remove tangles. A good quality, flexible wide-tooth comb is a good option, but your fingers can actually be the best detangling tool! Begin at the bottom and slowly work your way up to the scalp area.

Brushes, especially when used on dry hair, can cause frizz and should be avoided.

Use a gentle moisturizing shampoo. If possible find one that is sulfate free. To prevent tangles and over washing, use our basic curl cleansing techniques:

• Wet hair thoroughly without disrupting the hair’s basic shape

• Apply shampoo directly to the scalp

• Gently work the shampoo into your scalp area, but avoid vigorous scrubbing motions which can cause your hair to break or tangle.

• Rinse with your hair tilted backward to wash away dirt and product build-up

Give your hair sufficient moisture every day to keep it healthy, hydrated and frizz-free. Curly hair craves moisture, and the curlier your hair is, the more moisture it needs. Use a conditioner such as Influance Hydrating Conditioner or Moisturizing Conditioner with Shea Butter. These products use natural botanicals to hydrate, nourish, and rejuvenate the hair.

Leave in conditioners such as Influance leave in conditioner, are also an excellent way to keep your hair hydrated throughout the day. A leave in conditioner is weightless and fast absorbing. It instantly detangles the hair, increases manageability, and adds body and shine to all hair types.

• For wavy, finer, sparser hair types, avoid applying conditioner to the scalp area and apply it only to the mid and lower sections of your hair

• For curlier, coarser, thicker hair types, apply conditioner often and all-over. The curlier your hair is, the more moisture it needs.

Most towels are too heavy and absorbent for curly hair. Scrubbing and rubbing your hair with a towel can cause breakage, tangling, and friction, which leads to frizz. Instead of a super absorbent towel, use a microfiber towel or soft T-shirt type fabric to gently blot and pull excess water from your curls.

For best results, allow your hair to air dry naturally. If you blow dry your hair, then use an adapter for your dryer to protect it from losing moisture.

FOR STYLING Moisture rich styling products are a necessity for curly hair. For best results, apply styling gel or product to your hair while it is still wet. For even distribution, divide your hair into sections, and then work the product into each section. Depending upon your hair's thickness and density, you may need to apply a styling product more than once. The curlier and thicker your hair is, the more moisture it needs and the more product it will absorb.

You can gently scrunch your hair after apply the styling product to shape your curls.
